Tiny Love Stories in New York

Project type

Date

SOME STORIES LAST A LIFETIME
SOME LAST ONLY A MOMENT.
BOTH CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING.

Behind every window, a different heart beats.
Some meet. Some miss. Some remember.
These are New York's tiny love stories.

Now the rest of the story is yours to imagine...

ーーーーー

2026 marks the 20th anniversary of my move from Tokyo to New York. To commemorate two decades of living in this city, I created this personal, self-initiated project as the cover for an imaginary book about the countless stories unfolding behind New York's apartment windows.

One of my favorite things to do while riding a bus or sitting in a car is to stare out at apartment windows and imagine the lives behind them. Who lives there? What are they doing? Who do they love, and what are they waiting for? After twenty years in New York, these windows have become a familiar and deeply personal part of my experience of the city.

The illustration brings together fictional encounters, relationships, memories, and fleeting moments inspired by my twenty years in New York. Each window suggests a different story, inviting viewers to look closer and create their own narratives. Some stories are joyful, some bittersweet, and some may last only for a moment—but even the briefest encounter can become part of a much larger story.

This piece is my visual love letter to New York on the occasion of my 20th anniversary here. It reflects the people I have met, the moments I have witnessed, the memories I have collected, and the countless stories I have imagined along the way.
